Troubleshooting on Basic — trips aren't logging

Updated Stefan Jacobsen

Isn't Autogear Basic logging your trips? In most cases this is caused by permissions or battery saving — not a bug in the app. Go through the checkpoints below in order, and it will usually resolve itself.

Short pauses are completely normal. To save battery, the app rests when nothing is moving, and wakes up automatically again when the car or phone starts moving. So it looking "quiet" for a while isn't a bug.

1. Have all permissions been granted?

Check the app's permissions in your phone settings:

These three must be in place — otherwise automatic logging won't start:

  • Bluetooth turned on — so the app can find the tag
  • Location set to "Always" (not "Only while using the app")
  • Motion & fitness allowed

These make logging more stable, but aren't strictly required:

  • Notifications allowed — so you can see the app scanning
  • Let the app run in the background / turn off battery saver for the app

How to get to the settings:

  • Easiest — in the app: open the Account screen in Autogear Tracker. It shows the status of each permission, and the app sends you straight to the right setting if something is missing.
  • iPhone: or go to Settings, scroll down to Autogear Tracker, and set each permission. For location: choose Location → "Always".
  • Android: or go to Settings → Apps → Autogear Tracker → Permissions. For location: choose "Allow all the time". Battery saver is under Apps → Autogear Tracker → Battery.
Turning off Bluetooth stops the logging — it starts automatically again as soon as you turn it back on. Location must be set to "Always". Don't force-quit the app — that also stops the logging.

2. Is battery saving on?

Battery saving mode can put apps you rarely open to sleep, so they stop logging. This is different from the app's own battery saving (which is completely normal). Check whether your phone's battery saving has affected Autogear Tracker, and turn it off for the app.

3. Are you still logged in?

Check that you haven't been logged out of Autogear Tracker. Open the app and confirm that you're logged in. You normally stay logged in — even after the phone has been turned off or restarted.

4. Is the tag being detected?

Open the app — the tag should appear in the overview. If it doesn't appear, check:

  • That Bluetooth is turned on
  • That the necessary permissions are granted in the app
  • That the tag is nearby (sit in the car)

5. Is the app up to date?

Most phones update apps automatically, but not all. Check the app store to see if an update for Autogear Tracker is available.

6. Poor coverage or Bluetooth unavailable?

The app works fine offline. It stores trips locally and syncs them automatically to Autogear when internet and Bluetooth are back — you don't need to do anything yourself. If a trip is missing, it may therefore show up a little later once the phone is back online.

7. Does logging stop often?

If you have battery/power saving on Android: set up "Background usage limits" and put Autogear Tracker in "Never auto-sleep for apps".

iPhone: this setting doesn't exist. Instead, make sure "Low Power Mode" is off and background app refresh is allowed for the app.
