Getting started with Autogear Basic

Updated Stefan Jacobsen

With Autogear Basic you get an automatic electronic mileage log without installing fixed GPS in the car. Trips are registered by the Autogear tag together with your mobile phone. This guide takes you through the entire setup — from download to your first completed trip.

What you need: an active Autogear user (you'll receive an invitation by email), the Autogear tag (sent by post) and an iPhone or Android.

Step 1 — Download Autogear Tracker

Autogear Tracker registers trips automatically in the background and detects the tag via Bluetooth. Scan the QR code for your phone, or search for Autogear Tracker in your app store.

Step 2 — Log in to Tracker

  1. Open Autogear Tracker.
  2. Log in with the same email and password you use for Autogear.
  3. Approve the permissions the app asks for (see below).

These three must be in place — otherwise automatic logging won't start:

  • Bluetooth turned on — so the app can find the tag
  • Location set to "Always" (not "Only while using the app")
  • Motion & fitness allowed

These make logging more stable, but aren't strictly required:

  • Notifications allowed — so you can see the app scanning
  • Let the app run in the background / turn off battery saver for the app

How to get to the settings:

  • Easiest — in the app: open the Account screen in Autogear Tracker. It shows the status of each permission, and the app sends you straight to the right setting if something is missing.
  • iPhone: or go to Settings, scroll down to Autogear Tracker, and set each permission. For location: choose Location → "Always".
  • Android: or go to Settings → Apps → Autogear Tracker → Permissions. For location: choose "Allow all the time". Battery saver is under Apps → Autogear Tracker → Battery.
Set location to "Always" — not "While using the app". Without this, trips may be missing or incomplete. Don't force-quit the app — it needs to keep running in the background.

Step 3 — Activate and place the tag

When you receive the Autogear tag:

  1. Scan the QR code on the tag.
  2. Follow the activation steps in the app.
  3. Place the tag in the car — for example in the glove compartment, center console or a door pocket.

The tag needs no cables, power connection or installation. It works via Bluetooth together with your phone.

Step 4 — Download Autogear Driver

In Autogear Driver you see your trips, edit purpose, approve trips and create reports. Scan the QR code for your phone, or search for Autogear Driver.

Step 5 — Log in to Driver

  1. Open Autogear Driver.
  2. Log in with your email and password.
  3. Create a PIN code, and enable biometric login if you want.
  4. Approve notifications and location.

Once you're logged in, you'll automatically get an overview of your trips.

You're all set

Once Tracker and Driver are set up, the mileage log records trips automatically in the background. You get:

  • Automatic registration of all trips
  • A complete mileage log with a clear split between work and private
  • Ready documentation for mileage allowance and the Norwegian Tax Administration

To save battery, Tracker rests when you're stationary and wakes up automatically again when you drive — short pauses are completely normal. The app also works without coverage and syncs trips once you're back online. If the phone restarts, logging continues on its own and you remain logged in.

Tips for a stable setup: keep Bluetooth on, location set to "Always", let Tracker run in the background, and keep your phone with you in the car.
